Razor is probably correct, however there are some other possibilities.
Did your wife receive a letter from this "butt-head" collection agency advising her of her right to dispute the debt?
Have you checked her credit report to see if there was ANOTHER cc account?
Did you verify that this is the SAME account # and information as the one you "paid off"?
Did you yourself handle the pay-off to the prior ca? and did you keep all your records?
