not a good keeper of records

If you aren't sure of the date you became delinquit and you don't have any old records to pull from, and you still owe the debt, would it be a bad idea to contact the original creditor and ask? I have a collection that has a "last activity" of last year but these are very old debts and are from NC and the SOL is only 4 years there, I know they are past that, they were medical bills from my kids when they were little so I know for sure they are old, at least 6 or 7 years.
