Legally, a collection agency that purchases your bad debt from a lender can attempt to collect on it indifinitely. However, if they aren't threatening to sue and you know for a fact that the item is deleted from all of your credit reports, you don't have much incentive to pay back. You would not benefit in this case. But, you need to verify that it's not on your reports any longer
