15 Year Old debt being sent to Collections

I just received a collections notice from a 3rd party collection agency wanting to collect money from me. They informed me that Bank of America sold them the collection. I asked Bank of America and I am in perfect standing with them and they do not have a record of any account that I have ever had a problem with. I have had perfect credit for a long time now and have even just purchased and refinanced my new home. I contacted them and all they can say is that I owe them. I have not been moving around and I feel like this is almost like a scam. Can they wreck my credit, what do I do?
