CA sent a check as Validation?? what so I do

I sent a VALidation letter to a CA demanding validation... they shortly sent a check back to me (A personal check that was mine) however I never used it nor I never made a purchase with it with the OC.... The price is super small.. (30$) however I refurse to pay what wasn't mine... also I am FURIOUS that this is in my credit report.. (It was placed in 97) What are my options?? do I consider this validation??
how can I prove that I didn;t write this check? The check was writting in early 97
