What BS. If they did not validate, they cannot continue collection activity, even through an attorny.

I would send the attorney a letter stating that continued collection activity without validation is a violation of the FDCPA, and that you intend to sue the CA (if you really are willing to take this to court).

If you are not willing to take it to court, then send a letter stating that you requested validation and you will not pay anyone anything because you have no proff that the account in question belongs to you, include a C&D statement, along the lines of "unless you can provide me with proof that I am the person who owes this debt, please cease all attempts to contact me regarding this debt."

Your response really depends on how far you are willing to go with this.
