I agree... stall them as long as you can, as I've been doing since Feb when I was laid off. Unemployment doesn't pay bills, its meager survival at best.

I never said they weren't my debts.. and actually, the thought of filing bankruptcy is quite distasteful, I wasn't brought up to avoid my responsibilities. However, I didn't grow up in my parents days (or yours WhyChat) when people could expect a career with a single company for 25, 30, or 40 years. I've been laid off from a job THREE times in the past 10 years, the first one I was out of work for 6-1/2 months (w/o UE no less !) and when I did finally get a job, it was at a 40% cut in pay from the previous job ! Six years later, I was just barely seeing the light at the end of the debt tunnel from the first layoff, when I got laid off yet again ! This time I didn't have a severance check and IRA for a cushion,I had, at best, 2K total in cash. I managed to get a new job in TN, the expense of moving was a rotten expense, but the job market in Greenville SC at the time (and still) was horrible for tech people like me, if I hadn't moved I wouldn't have had a job at all. That was 2 years ago. I had to walk away from my house because it wouldn't sell after 8 months on the market, it was foreclosed. I got laid off from THAT job in Feb 2002, and its been a nightmare. As I said, Unemployment doesn't pay bills, it barely paid my barest necessities. I called all my creditors, they don't care, one dirtbag even suggested I turn tricks on a street corner to pay my bills !!

So.. here I am, its August, and I can't possibly catch up with the amounts they want now. It would take nearly 5K JUST to 'catch up', even more to pay off the now charged-off accounts and those that will be charged off because I cannot meet their ludicrous demands. I don't see that I have many choices. These are judgments waiting to happen, so I do everything I can to stall the CA's. To make it worse, there's a really BIG lawsuit waiting in the wings for a now-unsecured 2nd mortgage. They haven't sued yet, but they will eventually, its nearly 50K. From where I stand, I don't see that I have much choice BUT to file for bankruptcy. I don't like it.. no, but I see it as the only way to get my life back. I'm sick of working to have 99% of my pay go to pay debts... THAT used to be called indentured slavery.
