It is not always easy to tell if an account has been assigned or sold, generally, if it has been recently charged off, it is assigned,you can send a validation request when you get your first letter wth the "mini-miranda" requesting they prove their authority to collect on the debt.

Employers check credit reports for the same reason they do drug screenings, to evaluate the character and potential problems of future employees.
