Help !!!! I am being sued for credit card debt....

My original creditor, Citibank, sold my charged off debt to another party. I was never notified - I just suddenly received a lawsuit notice (it is valid I checked with the court) The amount charged off is $4900 from the year 2000. The new creditor says that they took over the debt in Feb 2002 - I received the lawsuit in May 2002(with no prior notification)and now the amount due is $8100 !!! I cannot afford to pay that. Can they jack it up that high that quickly? Once I was notified of the lawsuit I contacted the creditor and stated that if it was a valid debt I would be willing to pay (I am recently divorced, but stand no chance of getting the ex to pay - I am having trouble just getting child support!) Should I just pay the amount they are asking for? Should I go to court and ask to pay 75 cents on the dollar? I am trying to borrow money - I would rather be in debt to others than have a judgment or any other relationship with these creditors. Advice??? I am due back in court in about two weeks.
