It sounds like your rights were violated, based on what you have written here. You are not giving up your rights to know the history of the account and how they arrived at that figure, even if you pay.

Even if you are, it is not worth it for $250. A lawyer would cost way more than that, and that is where you would have to go.

I refused to pay an eye doctor (this was years ago) he turned the debt over to an attorney, I agreed we'd see what the judge said. My Mom was admitted to the hospital the day before the court date, I had to go to another city (110 mi away). I went to the lawyer's office and paid the debt. I ended up with a default judgment anyway and then had to pay $400 to get the judgment vacated. In the meantime it cost me in terms and interest rates. I made up my mind after that I would never take the "I'm not paying you until...." route again. It is way more expensive than paying and then fighting with them. Plus, if you do have to go to court, you are the "good guy," not the "deadbeat."

Even if you have the time to deal with it now (sounded like you didn't), pay, dispute at the same time, and don't back down.
