I wish I could help you, BUT, you can't afford a lawyer, couldn't even stick around to defend yourself at a hearing,don't even know if the ca suing you showed up and don't know if a default judgment was issued,I doubt you will follow any advice,HOWEVER:

How about trying to find out what happened, call the court, or better yet go there and get the papers to have the default judgment set aside, (you have 30 days to contest it) File an appeal based on the grounds the lawsuit was time-barred.If you can't figure out how to do it yourself, see if there is a legal aid office.
