Check out www.cardoffers.com, and look up GetSmart Visa Classic in their alphabetical listing and you will find tons of complaints about Providian in their cardholder reviews section. It seems everybody is getting their account closed or credit line reduced by them. I just had my credit line reduced last month. They said the account was sold to CompuCredit (Aspire Diamond Visa) and that adventually I will receive billing from them. The reason they stated for my credit line reduction was due to negative activity during the last two years on my Equifax report. I pulled my report from Equifax and, of course, there is no negative activity since 1997. I hear that CompuCredit is scum of the Earth just like Providian. So I'm not too excited about the switch. I've had much better luck with Capital One. But the don't report your credit limit to the bureaus.
