Old Hospital Bill

I have been paying a collection agency for several years on a hospital bill. From $2200 down to $550 now. I got the monthly bill and $1600 had been added to it. I called and they said that was from 1996. (9 yrs ago) I never received a bill on this and am pretty sure I owe it, but, do they have some kind of limitations on making people pay. Nine years is a long time to dodge yearly audits, don't you think?
