Bellsouth Mobility

Hi, a few years ago I purchased a cell phone through bellsouth mobility dcs. My brother wanted one as well, and being the trusting sort, I purchased one for him in my name as well. 3 years later (or 2 years ago), his wife left, and took the phone with her. He notified me, and I called and cancelled the account (not under contract at that point)..We waited for the final bill, and he paid me the full sum, which I deposited then paid bellsouth. A week after I mailed them my check, Bellsouth was merged into the Cingular Wireless group, and all accounts were changed over as well. I still have my cell phone through them, same account. Yesterday, I received a call from a collection agency, wanting to collect on my brothers account (which was in my name). Not wanting to give them any information, and wanting to stall until I could find my copy of the check (I can not find it, grrr), I told the CA that I do not beleive the debt is mine, and that I will need to look back in my records. He asked me several times to make a payment (total due is less than $100) over the phone. He then asked me to hold. After 30 seconds, he picked up again, with a supervisor on the phone. The supervisor stated that the call was being recorded, and asked for my payment again. I told him that I need to check my paperwork, and would give them a call back. He then asked me 'So you are refusing to pay this debt today?' My response was 'I am refusing to pay today because I do not have any records available to me, and will need to research it'...The supervisor then told the original caller (A Mr. Ortega) to mark me as 'refused to pay' then they hung up on me.. Did I handle this wrong?
