Negotiating charge-offs

Hi,

I have a couple of old charge-offs (1996/1997) and would like to negotiate to get them off my report. I figure I can probably negotiate a small payment as they are so old. How can I find out who now owns the debt (i.e. if it was bought by a colection agency)? Who is it best to start with - the original creditor or the last collection agency listed on my credit report?
