CA cheated!!

My wife is paying a CA for a charge 10 years ago. The debt always showed as "paid charge off". She got notified by the CA last year. Then we did not know that we did not have to pay because of the SOL and it seems the CA may have adjusted the dates and now says that the debt amount is larger than the original debt.
She has made payments every month, but no change has been made to the amount on her CR. Which is also the original amount.
I told her to stop payment until the total amout of your payments are reflected on the CR. Now the question, I want her to stop making payments because after reading numerous articles here and doing reasearch than the CA got her to pay illegally. Is that good advice? If not, what do you think? I need HELP!!!
