Does is sound legitimate ? NO ! Never take a collection agency's "word" for anything, they LIE !! It could be all an illegal threat to make you pay when there might be no lawsuit at all ! Ignore the phone, don't talk to these idiots. If they're really going to sue you, you'll see REAL paperwork to prove that. If they do, you'd still have the opportunity to settle w/o going to court. Whatever you do, get EVERYTHING in writing with signatures, before you give anybody a single dime.
