Told by phone I will be served by the Sherrif's office

I was in debt over $36,000.00 one year ago. I worked through a negotiator company and now have one account left. The last payment on this account to MBNA was in August of this year. The balance is considerable, about $8,000.00. They refuse to work through what they call a 3rd party and told me that I would be served. The office is that of Wolpoff and Abramson. Is this common for this company and what do they mean by "served". I feel like a dummy.
