YES!-

There are sample dispute & validation letters right here on WhyChat's website. Dispute it immediately. State that you dispute the claims made in entirety and in any and all parts.
Type this letter, make a few copies. The first one goes into your file cabinet. The second you sent via certified mail with the certified numbers typed on the letter - another form of evidence in your favor. Helps to go to Post Office and pick up some of the green cards and certified mail blanks with the detatchable stickie numbers.
The third copy you send to the same scumbag outfit, via general US mail. You type "VIA CERTIFIED AND GENERAL US MAIL" on your letter in addition to the numbers. This demonstrates that you are serious, not to be trifled with.
Then wait. If and when you get the green card back, mark you date of receipt upon it - more evidence in your favor. Most of these thugs don't bother to validate. If they don't and file suit - good for you, bad for them. If they do validate, always the chance you might be sued as proactive measure, but as you say they are making wildly inflated claims of amounts owed. That by the way is typical also of these leeches.
Remember, they have thirty days to validate. Your failure to dispute is not taken as tacit agreement with their claims, either. And Until these sleazebags validate, they are to abstain from any further collection activity. THey are also supposed to notify the Credit Reporting Agencies that the debt is disputed, and this is to be posted on your report - if not, more potential FTC trouble - for them.
They are likely also required to send you a privacy notice allowing you to "opt out" of their "info sharing" i.e. legalized stalking, programs. The onus is on these termites to do this. If they don't, send them a privacy notice stating that all information is to be kept secrect about you, no selling it off to fellow dirtbags. This is under the Gramm - Leach - Bliley Law, Sections 6804 - 6810, I believe.
You have rights, these people have no scruples and will say and do whatever it takes to get money from anyone. They count on debtors' lack of awareness of their rights and fear of judicial process to gain their ends. THey operate in hope that you do not punch them back, that you politely rerain from filing complaints with the Federal Trade Commission and your State's Attorney General or applicable agency. They live in dread that you might catch on to their legalized racket and make life interesting for them. Smash them back hard, repeatedly. Condition them to accept that mucking about in your life will gain them pain, costs, trouble with the government. Do it without mercy full in the knowledge that they would show you none.
These are the people who suggest to distraught spouses of seriously ill debtors that when they seem them next in hospital, 'tell him to kill himself, that way we can collect the insurance."
To know these subhuman inguinal bubos is to know the intense desire for a shower.
