Items past 3 year SOL and still trying to collect...

I have gotten a call from a collection agency trying to collect items that are way past the NC 3 year medical SOL. Am I obligated. She informed me that I had to pay whatever showed on my credit report (good for 7 years) and that there was never any SOL that would apply. Who is right? I am now receiving collection notices from them. Can I sue? They talk to me really horribly and in a derogatory manner.
What should I do?
