Judging from past personal experience with a private student loan, Zwicker is bad news. They are not joking about suing you - they sued me and caused all kinds of headaches - though the description you gave sounds more like they are just talking tough. Get the debt validated ASAP and find someone at AMEX to accept a settlement. They WILL sue you, eventually, but they would rather just get cash out of you and avoid the hassle of going to court. If you know a friend who is a lawyer and owes you a favor, this might be a good time. Good luck.
