Applying for Mortgage same time an old debt shows up

I was notified that a collection for a 1997 hospital bill has been reported to my credit report. I have not been sent anything about this bill for several years and did dispute it with a collection agency that threatend to sue me even after the SOL ran out. Now it may end up costing me the mortgage I'm applying for. Do I have any recourse. Any Help is appreciated
