Unfortunately, applying for new credit is likely to wake the sleeping trolls :( Same for disputing stuff on your credit report. It will let the trolls know that you are paying attention to your credit and it may be time to pounce.

Renting can be a problem with charge-offs showing. Your best bet is to rent from an individual who won't check your credit like a commercially-run complex or real estate office will.
