Resetting the clock question

In 1996 I defaulted on a loan in Utah. I thought that by waiting it out it would be removed from my credit report this year. Suddenly I show a default judgement entered in 2001 regarding this debt which carries on my credit report until 2008. Is the clock reset from the time of the judgement or is it somehow tied in to the date of the original default of the debt?
