Should I trust them?

I have a small ($133) charge off on my credit report from Verizon. I contacted their Writeoff Recovery department today, and they offered to wipe all negatives from my credit report if I would pay the amount due to RMA, the agency servicing the debt. The guy I spoke with SOUNDED very nice, and I really want to believe him, but I know that if I pay and then he does nothing, I have no recourse. He gave me very detailed instructions on asking RMA for a confirmation letter, faxing it to him, following up by phone, etc. However, he refused to send anything in writing and also refused to sign anything I sent him. He made me feel guilty, talked about trust. :) If it's a scam, he's pretty good! Do I trust them, or is this just an "all's fair in love, war, and collections" scam? Thanks in advance for any advice.
