Pay them nothing, say little to them, put nothing in writing. They are scamming you. The debt is no longer collectable. Not only is there no advantage to you paying this, if you do you will open a whole new crate of rotting fish in which to roll around.
At this point their actions are illegal and should be reported to the FTC and your state AG. You might also be able to sue them in Small Claims Court though the complaints to the government and your silence to them will best serve you.
