Contact your creditors and collection agencies and ask for a below blanket settlement. A BBS is usually a payment of 30% or less. If you don't like the person that answers the phone hang up and call back to get someone else. In collection offices there are hundreds of people, keep calling until you find someone that will work with you!! BBS's are considered for people in serious financial difficulty and if you can prove your income is not enough to cover your expenses you will usually be approved. Make sure you receive a letter first that states the sum is a compromised settlement in full on the outstanding balance. Upon satisfactory receipt of payment the credit reporting agencies will be notified that the account is settled in full and will be noted as such on your credit reports. A few years ago I did this for my husband on all of his old debts. I negotiated a settlement on a 13,714.64 debt for 3,000. (The original charge off was 5500) We never received a 1099a in the mail either. My husbands debts were in the amount of 30,000. Most of that was just the interest accumulated. Best of luck.
