One tactic that works but screws up your credit rating for years is to stop paying and save up the money. Then offer the cc 50% of the amount owed. This works if the cc has not sent the account to a ca. Once it's with the ca it's hard to negotiate a good deal.

Ask the cc to validate the debt to buy some time.
