Your job typically ends up on your CR by way of credit applications. Also, if the CRA asks for address verification and you submit a paystub to satisfy, they may add the information found on the stub.

But there are tons of ways that motivated creditors can find out where you work or anything else they want to know.

Contests, free trials, surveys. There's something called "Info Appending". It is marketed under many brand names, but it's all the same. It's a service offered by data warehouses where they buy seemingly unrelated information from many sources and then... relate it.

Ex:
In your situation, your CR has outdated employment but valid name and recent address information.

Your creditor can purchase Info Appending from some datawarehouse (that may be the same CRA, because they are in the data industry) and have the data warehouse crosscheck all data available to turn up the missing information.

If they find three records that match for the street address, one of those records might have your email address attached to it, one of them might have your phone number and the other might have your employer data in it.

If you filled out a form at a website for professionals in your field, they typically ask for your employer, your title, etc. If the operator of that site sells information, you could be giving your employment details to your creditors without it ever having to appear on your report.

There's a ton of other ways they can find it. Basically, any time you give away info, expect that it will turn up in the hands of someone who wants to collect from you.

Also, if you have your own domain and the whois information is valid, they will use that too. That information widely available and often sold.
