If you were not served properly, you MAY have grounds for having the judgment vacated.

This would depend on :
1- Proof of improper service.
2- Proof that if you HAD been notified properly you would have had an affirmative defense.

I agree, you should NEVER pay a CA with a personal check,
(actually, I believe you should never pay a CA AT ALL)
