Pulled Credit Report, have some questions?

I just pulled my credit report from Experian. I live in CT. I have a few questions? My Chase Manhattan account says, "transferred/account, charged off, $2,545 written off. What does "written off" mean? Fleet Bank: Account charged off/past due 90 days. $2,334 written off. Again, "written off"? Palisades Collection LLC (for my Providian account) Collection account: $2,844 past due as of 12-2003. Is this attempting to still be collected? I have not received any paper work AT ALL, not even from a collector. PRVN BNCRP: my original Providian account before the CA took it. Says, "account charged off/past due 90 days, $2,844 written off. $899 past due as of 7-2003. Question? $899 went to CA? I'm not sure of the best way to try and start rebuilding my credit. I have an abusive husband, I really want to work this out on my own. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your time.
