Yes, you do need to follow this up. They need this info for various reasons; i.e. verifing you as the debt holder, the actual charge off date and the such. Just give them this info, and if your account truly is past stat, it'll go away. But they will still send this account back to their collections department to attempt to collect. Even though it's past stat, does not mean they can't collect on it.
