How to determine if a CA really owns your debt

I received a notice from Wolpoff & Abramson stating I owed them XXX dollars for a debt incurred from an outstanding MBNA credit card account. It is true I once owned an MBNA credit card and failed to pay on the balance. How do I determine if W&A really own this debt? Do I just use the letter they sent as proof? Don't really want to do that, I'd rather use an independent source. Any suggestions
