I don't think you can be denied housing for bad credot or lack of credit by Fair Housing Laws. I think they can just charge you typically up to 2 months deposit, but check NY state law.

Instead of spending your money building credit, save it and apply it to a deposit. Showing money in the bank is usually a good substitute for credit. And you can always offer to pay several months upfront to enourage a potential landlord.

It takes years to build good credit, nothing much to be done in 2 months. Unless you have student loans and can pay those.
