sold and closed

I had an account that was sold to a collection agency that has since closed in '99. Since that time it does not show to be sold to another agency. How do I find out where it went to or is it considered no longer my problem since that agency closed? Show I have Experian try to verify the debt and hope that it gets dropped off my report?
