How can I deal directly with the O.C. if it's been sold?

I've read here that we should NEVER pay a debt to a collector, but what if the account has been sold a dozen times and keeps getting re-sold? Won't the original creditor just say they don't care about the account anymore, and plus wouldn't it be illegal for them to take money for it after having sold the account to someone else?
