The poster above (MCM Bait) is exactly right. Use a credit card if you have a choice, because the law allows you to refuse to pay a disputed amount. No such luck with a debit card. When you discover the fraud, your money is already gone. With a credit card, the bank is more likely to be on your side because their money is at risk.

Also if there are unauthorized charges on a debit card it could cause your account to be overdrawn. Then you'd have a bunch of bank fees (which may be forgiven) and bounced payments to third parties (not so easily forgiven).

With either card, it's vital to control spending. It is easy to forget how a bunch of seemingly insignificant $30 purchases will add up to big money at the end of the month.
