Providian Charge-off

I have a charge-off from Providian of $5700.00, date of last activity is May 2002. I was paying them monthly last year and they ended up selling the account in December. I had the balance down to $2340.98 at that time. I periodically heard from a lawyer in Salt Lake City, Utah named Brian Cannon and Associates but I never called them back since Providian was accepting payments. I finally recieved a letter from them (Brian Cannon) stating my account had been sold to Sherman Acquistions. I called Brian Cannon and was told to keep paying Providian and they would forward the money and they had a balance of $5400, my account on the website shows all my payments and my balance of $2340.98. Well Providian has no record of my account and on contacing Sherman I learn they have sold it already to Brian Cannon who only have my name and the old amount, no other paperwork according to them. The girl I spoke to at Brian Cannon was contacting Providian to get the current details but so far she has had no luck. I am in the UK now but my Mom still lives at my old address in Utah. It is a mobile home in mine and my sisters name, my mom and sister live there now. I have no income other then SSI Disability. Should I try to pay this off? I won't do anything until they update the current amount and put a settlement offer in writing. I do have the printout of my current account balance from Providian. Living in the UK I don't want any problems with the house since my Mom and sister live there now. I do still have my bank account in Utah, where my SSI goes. I would be grateful for any help. Thanks.
