You did not mess up. If this debt is 8 years old, it is probably SOL in just about any state. That means they can try to collect from you, but they can not sue you to get the money. For a debt that old, the will not be able to validate anything.

Don't worry, they may try to collect with threats, but the truth is they can not legally do anything to you. Unless this is a written contract under seal. Probably not! My best advice to you would be to ingnore them if they call or send mail to you. You might want to send the SOL letter. If they contact you after that, they are in violation of the FDCPA.
