Collection agency called yesterday-Who do I pay?

I got a call from them yesterday. It's not the first call. I was sent a letter saying that they were looking up information on me. I can't think of the right term to use. Anyway so when the guy called yesterday he threatened legal action because he said that a check bounced to my original creditor. The truth is I called the original creditor and told them I put a stop payment on the check because when I tried to deal with them recently they said I'd have to talk to the collection agency. It seems as though the agency hasn't purchased the debt, if that makes any sense. Whatever they get they're going to send to the credit card company, said the agent. Soooo, do you think if I offer the original creditor a lump sum, can I end this mess? What should I actually do? The debt is a valid one. It's just that I work about 10 hours a week and don't make that much money.
