First, NEVER give out your bank acct # to ANYBODY for direct debit ever. Recipe for disaster.
Gas and electric are regulated utilites.
Now, immediately complain to your Public Utilities/Services Commission.
I had a problem with my electric utility. They shut the juice off. Called utility, got nowhere. Called Public Utilities Commission,, THEN recalled utility. Electricity was back on in 4 hours.
Then utility tried to charge me for disconnect/reconnect fee.
Called Public Utilities Commission again. They gave a SPECIAL phone number at the utility to call, not the typical customer service representatives. The charges were off the bill in 24 hours.
They have to answer to utilities comsion.
