Help with a question about Collection Agencies

I have several charge offs. Now, after 7 years, new collection agencies are contacting me, stating they bought the debt, and are now collecting it. Even worse, they put a new entry into my credit report, showing I was in charge off status from the date they "acquired" the debt.
Is this legal? Is there anything I can do?
