They use auto-dialers and until you pick up the phone, it keeps cycling thru the dialers.

What's the point ? To annoy you enough to call them back ! Far too many people do and they win that way. If people would just turn off the ringers and let the answering machine pick up, they wouldn't have so much success with that game.
