Dispute it with the credit bureaus. They should remove it whether it has been paid or not. But once you start trying to clean up your report, watch out for the collection agencies who have bought your old debts - once you contact information is updated, they will start coming out of the woodwork.

read the section o this site about credit problems, and search for other info about how to handle the collection agencies.
