It sounds very suspicious. The index number could be the index from their database. Many collections attorneys file in bulk. It's not unusual for them to enter it into the database but not actually *file* the complaint with the court.

Check for an official COURT DOCKET case number. Those usually follow a standard naming convention such as D97-0876 (indicating for instance, "Divorce" 1997, case 876). If you see something like that, call the courthouse and ask them if such a complaint has been filed with that case number.

Don't worry. The clerks will not alert the attorney that you called and your call will not have any bearing on whether you were properly served. Some jurisdictions allow service by mail, so you need to make sure there is no return date for filing an answer. If you miss that date, they get a default judgment.
