Old debt,new letter-need assistance

Hello and thank you for a fine website. Alot of good information. Now on to my question,
I ran into financial difficulty 9 years ago and did not pay a 700.00 bill to a dealership. The collection agancy, Pacific Exchange placed a collection on my credit files and it lasted for 7 years. Now my credit is spotless with several perfectly paid credit acounts and a 40k car loan. I just got a letter from the collection agency demading payment which is now 1300.00. So my question is, what should I do. I do not want them to place anything back on my credit reports again after it has already fell off. I live in California. Thank you in advance.
PS-No suit was ever files
