Understanding credit report

I am looking over my credit report (amazing how much is on there and didnt even know it) Anyway there are a bunch of codes like R-1, R-9, U-9, 0-9 what do they mean?? And what is the easiest way to dispute something on your credit report?? I have 12 accounts on mine that Should not be there (paid off along time ago)but still showing i owe?? Should I write Transunion Equifaz and Experian all a letter and send it certified??
