Yes, it is certainly possible that the collection division of Equifax would take notice if a debtor whose account they were handling requested a consumer
disclosure of his/her Equifax
credit report. It
indicates that the debtor is concerned his/her
credit status (i.e. presence of bad
debts on the
report), which could be used as leverage to encourage payment.
The seven
year time limit is for credit reporting
only (i.e. how long a credit bureau can list an
item on you report.) The statute
of limitations
only disqualifies lawsuits filed after the SOL expires.
However, there
is *no* time limit on *requesting*
payment of old bad debts, via letters and/or phone
calls. The requests won't necessarily be very vigorous, though. Here is what to do:
Read our *Collection
Agency FAQ*, in our *Credit
Problems*
Send a response to the address on the collection letter, clearly stating that you are on disability benefits, absolutely cannot afford to pay, and,
as per the FDCPA,
you are ordering them to stop
contacting you. Hopefully, they will get the point, and move on to some better target. Good Luck.
