time limit for a service to be charged...

Is there a limit time for a service to be charged?…. When I lived in NY my wife needed to go to a Hospital, after 2 years the hospital informed me that not all the charges where covered by my insurance and because a mistake of their part they just realized that. Now they are asking me to pay that amount (I have that letter where they say so). My question is: Do I have to pay?… or can I avoid it because it took too long (2 years) to inform me that I owed that money and they haven’t realized so.
