Help!!! Hospital Bill/Collection

I just received notice from a collection agency that they are collecting on a bill incurred back in July, 2000. I never received a bill for it and furthermore it is for an emergency room visit that I had a copay on for insurance. I have been on hold with the hospital for over an hour just to get their freaking fax number so I can request a copy of the bill that I never received!!! Is it at all possible that the statute of limitations has run and they cannot collect on a bill that old? Any other suggestions out there? Thanks!!
